Nach ein paar kalten Tagen ist es wieder warm und sonnig geworden. Schlecht fuer die Jaeger, weil die Hirschboecke sich trotzt der Brunft in den schattigen Canyons verstecken, gut fuer uns, weil wir reiten koennen. Gestern waren Anke, Krista (die Frau unseres Jagdguides Tom) und ich unterwegs, um unsere Pferdeherde zu checken.

After a few cold days it has become warm and sunny again. Bad for the hunters because despite the rut the deer bucks are hiding in the shady canyons. Good for us because we can go riding. Yesterday Anke, Krista (the wife of our hunting guide Tom) and I went out to check on our horse herd.

Poco, den ich fuer Stella eingetauscht habe, macht sich gut. Nach anfaenglichem Unwillen wird er immer motivierter (wenn auch alles in Zeitlupe). Anke moechte ihm am liebsten mit nach Deutschland nehmen.

Poco, who I got in exchange for Stella, is doing well. After being somewhat unwilling at first he is getting more motivated with every ride (even if in slow motion). Anke would love to take him home to Germany.

Wir haben auch unserem Nachbarn dabei geholfen, seine Faersen/Kalbinnen (erstgebaehrende Kuehe) hereinzuholen. Am Tag danach stand ein weiterer Schwangerschaftstest an. Die "offenen" (nicht schwangeren) Kuehe haben wir dann zusammen mit Ken zum Viehauktionshaus gefahren.

We also helped our neighbor to move in his heifers (first-time mother cows). On the day after they had to be preg checked as well. Together with Ken we drove the "open" (not pregnant) cows to the livestock sale barn in town.

Am Samstag haben Nick und ich es zum dritten Mal in diesem Jahr geschafft, ins Kino zu gehen. Der neue James Bond war spannend, aber ich will auch unbedingt "Lincoln", "Argo" und "Flight" sehen.

On Saturday Nick and I managed for the third time this year to go to the movie theater. The new James Bond was exciting. But I also want to see "Lincoln", "Argo" and "Flight".

Am Donnerstag wird hier das traditionelle Thanksgiving-Fest gefeiert, immer mit Truthahn. Dieses Jahr werden wir nur zu Viert sein: Nick, seine Mutter JoAnn, Anke und ich. Doch vorher hat Nick noch viel Arbeit am See zu erledigen ... ja, darueber wollte ich irgendwann auch noch ausfuehrlich berichten.

Thursday is Thanksgiving-Day, probably the most traditional of all American holidays. And it's always turkey. This year we'll just be four: Nick, Nick's mom JoAnn, Anke and I. But before Nick still has a lot of work to do at the lake ... yes, at some time I will have to write about that in more detail.

Am Dienstag haben wir unserem Nachbarn Ken geholfen, seine ca. 260 Kuehe zur Ranch zu treiben und auf Schwangerschaft zu testen. Die Nicht-Schwangeren (in diesem Fall waren es 18) haben Pech und werden als Schlachtvieh verkauft, denn hier kann sich kein Rancher leisten, eine Kuh nur zum Spass durchzufuettern.

 

On Tuesday we helped our neighbor Ken to move his about 260 cows to the ranch for preg checking. The open cows (not pregnant, in this case 18) have bad luck and are sold as butcher meat because here no rancher can afford to feed a cow just for fun.

 

Das Wetter war herrlich. Der Viehtrieb dauerte nur knapp zwei Stunden. Dann begann die Arbeit am Chute. Waehrend Nick und die Cowboys dafuer sorgten, dass immer Rinder im Chute waren, testete der Tierarzt mit einem Griff in den After der Kuh und in diesem Fall auch mit einem Ultraschallgeraet, ob das Tier schwanger war oder nicht. Vom Darm aus kann man die Gebaermutter ertasten. Ultraschall macht die Untersuchung noch genauer, ist aber auch teurer.

 

The weather was gorgeous. The cattle drive only took close to two hours. Then we worked on the chute. While Nick and the cowboys kept the flow of cows going, the vet checked for pregnancy by pushing his arm into the cow's rectum - in this case also using ultrasound. From the intestine he can palpate the uterus. Ultrasound makes the check even more exact but it is also more expensive.

 

Ken bediente den Chute, Silke gab Impfungen, Anke bediente die Tore, und ich verabreichte Entwurmer. Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang waren wir fertig. Dann mussten noch die Jaeger bekocht und gewaehlt werden. Ich darf ja mit Green Card nicht waehlen, aber Nick tat seine Buergerpflicht. Mit einem Kommentar zum Wahlergebnis halte ich mich hier lieber zurueck :-)

 

Ken worked the cute, Silke vaccinated, Anke took care of the gates and I applied wormer. We were done by sunset. And still had to cook for our hunters and go and vote. I am not allowed to vote because I only have a Green Card but Nick did his duty as a citizen. And no: I am not going to comment the outcome of the elections in this blog :-)
