In der Praerie / In the prairie

Diese Tage helfen wir wieder unterschiedlichen Nachbarn bei der Vieharbeit und kommen dabei viel herum. Gut, dass unsere Pferde so gern in den Haenger gehen. Am Freitag waren wir auch bei einem weiteren Branding. Hans hat beim Kaelberwresteln sicher einige Kilos verloren ;-)

These days we are helping various neighbors with their cattle work and are getting around quite a bit. Good luck that our horses like the trailer so much. On Friday we also went to another branding. Hans has probably lost several pounds wrestling calves ;-)

Christine und Doris wurden von Carina (Oesterreich) und Julia (Bayern) abgeloest, die auch kraeftig mitangepackt haben. Und gestern habe ich Linda und Silke abgeholt, die New Haven schon als zweites Zuhause betrachten. 

Christine's and Doris' spots were taken by Carina (Austria) and Julia (Bavaria) who also helped wrestling. And yesterday I picked up Linda and Silke who already consider New Haven their second home.

Zwischenstand: Wenn man den speziellen Maultiergurt bei Ginger korrekt anbringt, dann bekommt sie keinen Gurtdruck mehr. Jazz' kahle Stellen sind immer noch da. Das Lammfellpad hat keine Wunder gewirkt. Dafuer scheint wider alle Erwartungen ein simples Neoprenpad zu funktionieren. Man lernt nie aus.

FYI: When put on correctly, the mule cinch really works on Ginger. She does not get sored up anymore. Jazz' bald spots have not disappeared. The lamb wool pad did not work very well. But a simple neoprene pad seems to do ... against all expectations. Well, there is always something new to learn.

Heute geht es zum Rodeo in Hulett ... aber erst muessen wir noch Rinder "schieben" ... falls denn alle den Tanz am Samstagabend ueberlebt haben ;-)

Today we go to the Hulett rodeo ... but first we have to "move" some cattle ... if everyone has survived the Saturday night dance ;-)

Westernstadt Hulett / Western town of Hulett

Heute musste ich nach Hulett fahren, um Tierfutter zu kaufen. Hulett ist 30 Kilometer von der Ranch entfernt und damit der naechste Ort. Die kleine Westernstadt zaehlt 400 Einwohner, umliegende Ranches mitgerechnet. Hier ist die Main Street mit der Bank und einem der Saloons zu sehen. Mittelpunkt der Stadt ist der Tower Valley AG Supply, wo der Rancher einkauft. Auf dem Foto unten sind die Getreidesilos abgebildet. Unser Futter wird gerade abgefuellt.

Today I had to drive to Hulett to buy feed. Hulett is about 18 miles from the ranch and thus the closest town. The small Western town has 400 inhabitants, including the surrounding ranches. Here is a photo of Main Street with the bank and one of the saloons. Center of the town is Tower Valley AG Supply where ranchers buy. On the photo below you can see the feed bins. Our feed is filled into a big tote.

Hulett liegt im Nordosten Wyomings umgeben vom Bear Lodge National Forest. Der Belle Fourche River, der durch die Stadt fliesst, hat sich tief in den roten und gelben Sandstein gefressen. Man faehrt von hier nur rund eine halbe Stunde bis nach Montana und Sued-Dakota.

Hulett is situated in the Northeast of Wyoming, surrounded by Bear Lodge National Forest. The Belle Fourche River runs through town and has dug deep into the red and yellow sand stone. From here it is only half an hour to Montana and South Dakota.

Der Ort wurde nach Lewis Morgan Hulett benannt, der 1886 das erste Postamt des Ortes gruendete. Aufgrund der Naehe zum Devils Tower National Monument (dazu ein anderes Mal mehr) zieht Hulett viele Touristen an.

Hulett was named after Lewis Morgan Hulett who founded the town's first post office. Due to its vicinity to Devils Tower National Monument (more about that some other time) Hulett attracts lots of tourists.

Im Juni findet das mehrtaegige Hulett-Rodeo statt, und im August zieht die groesste Motorrad-Ralley der Welt durch den Ort. Im Fruehjahr und Herbst gehoert Hulett den Jaegern. Die Saegemuehle sorgt fuer eine Menge Arbeitsplaetze. Es gibt einen kleinen Supermarkt im Ort, aber fuer alle groesseren Einkaufe muessen wir mindestens 100 Kilometer nach Spearfish oder Gillette fahren.

In June they have the two-day Hulett rodeo and in August the world's biggest motorcycle rally comes through town. In spring and fall Hulett belongs to the hunters. The saw mill provides lots of jobs. And there is a small supermarket but for most of our shopping we have to drive at least 60 miles to Spearfish or Gillette.
