Rueckkehr der Zicklein / Return of the goat kids

Oh je! / Oh dear!

Was habe ich mir nur dabei gedacht? Als Brandy ihre beiden Ziegenbabies loswerden wollte, wusste ich doch schon aus langer Erfahrung, dass Ziegen trainingsresistent sind. Aber sie sind auch sooo suess! Jetzt brauchen wir fuer diese Beiden noch Namen (ein Maennlein, ein Weiblein). Nein Dori, nicht Olli und Hilda ... fuer deutsche Ohren hoert sich das seltsam an.

What was I thinking? When Brandy wanted to get rid of her two goat kids, I already knew from experience that goats are resistant to training. But they are also sooo cute! Now the two need names (one male, one female). No Dori, not Olli and Hilda ... for German ears this sounds really strange.

Und schon wieder ist eine Woche um: Abigail, Samantha, Roxane, Urs, Georg, Ruth und Danielle reisen ab. Und bald ist auch Barbaras, Lindas und Lisas Zeit auf New Haven um. Sie werden uns fehlen.

And another week is over: Abigail, Samantha, Roxane, Urs, Georg, Ruth and Danielle will leave. And soon Barbara's, Linda's and Lisa's time on New Haven is over as well. We will miss them.

Ein Laecheln / A smile

Ich weiss, ich weiss ... nicht jeder steht auf Tierbabies. Aber diese beiden Zicklein sind doch wirklich suess. Ich besuche sie jeden Morgen (um Mama zu fuettern), und ich gehe mit einem Laecheln.

I know, I know ... not everyone loves animal babies. But these goat kids are really cute. I visit them every morning (to feed mama) and I leave with a smile.

Ein ganz normaler Weihnachtstag / A Christmas day as usual

In den USA wird Weihnachten eigentlich erst am 25. Dezember gefeiert. Aber Tina und ich wuerden das festliche Essen an Heiligabend vermissen. Deshalb die Gans, die Nick (s. unten) mit Hilfe seiner Mutter JoAnn zerlegt. Dazu gab es meine Lieblingsgemuese wie Rosenkohl und Spargel und ein leckeres Kartoffelgratin. Nur Rotkohl bekommt man in dieser Gegend leider nicht. Morgen feiern wir bei JoAnn und ihrem Freund Buzz. Bis dahin werden auch Brandy, Brandon und Emmett aus ihrem Urlaub zurueckgekommen sein.

In the USA Christmas is celebrated on December 25. But Tina and I would miss the special supper on Christmas Eve. Therefore the goose which Nick (s. below) - with the help of his mother JoAnn - is cutting. We had my favorite veggies like brussel sprouts and asparagus and a delicious potatoe gratin. Just red cabbage I cannot find in this area. Tomorrow we'll celebrate at JoAnn's and her friend Buzz'. Till then Brandy, Brandon and Emmett will be back from their vacation as well.

Diesen Morgen haben wir eine halb erfrorene Ziege gefunden, die Ihr hier mit Ronja in der Kueche direkt neben dem Ofen seht. Leider ist "Brownie", wie wir sie getauft haben, spaeter doch noch gestorben. Pflanzenfresser und insbesondere Wiederkaeuer wie Ziegen muessen in Bewegung bleiben. Wenn ihr Verdauungssystem einmal zusammenbricht, dann ist es meist zu spaet. Ronja hat von Brownies Ende zum Glueck nichts mitbekommen.

This morning we found a half frozen goat which you can see here with Ronja in the kitchen next to the stove. Unfortunately "Brownie" as we named her died anyway. Herbivores and especially ruminants need to keep moving. Once their digestive system is down, it's mostly too late. Luckily Ronja did not see Brownie's ending.

Nick und ich mussten weit fahren, um die Herde zu finden, die dank des Hupens, auf das wir sie trainiert haben, schnell den Berg hinab kam. Nicht dass die Pferde das Heu wirklich brauchen, aber es gibt ihnen bei dieser Kaelte ein bisschen extra Energie.

Nick and I had to drive quite far to find the herd which thanks to us hunking the horn came down the hill quickly. The horses don't really need the hay but it does give them some extra energy during these cold days.
