Liebe auf den zweiten Blick / Love at second sight

Konnte mich gar nicht zwischen den beiden Fotos entscheiden - Pferd und Kalb (oben) oder Katerchen (unten) ... aber Pferd und Kalb sehen mehr Western aus. Dafuer sind Tom und Jerry (vorlaeufige Namen) suesser ... Rita hat sofort die Mutterschaft uebernommen. Unsere Katzen Misty und Squash sind nicht begeistert, aber wir brauchen mehr Maeusefaenger. Could not decide between the two photos - horse and calf (above) or new tom kittens (below) ... but horse and calf are more Western. Tom and Jerry (preliminary names) are cuter, though ... Rita immediately took over the mother role. Our cats Misty and Squash are not delighted but we need more mousers. More pics will follow.

Apropos Fotos: Da ich in den vergangenen Tagen viel unterwegs war, hat Angie mir netterweise ihren tollen Fotos zur Verfuegung gestellt. Gestern wollte ich dann enlich mal wieder reiten ... und Stella hat schon ihre neuen Eisen verloren ... bin etwas frustriert.

Photos: Since I was gone a lot the last few days, Angie let me have her great photos. Yesterday I wanted to ride again ... but Stella had already lost her new shoes again ... I am somewhat frustrated.

Matt, Angie und Fritz sind noch da, neu hinzugekommen sind Samantha, Cody und Kim aus Wisconsin, Denise aus der Schweiz und - nach einer laengeren Irrfahrt - Claudia und Anke aus Deutschland. Wir haben viel Rinderarbeit und waren auch wieder auf einem Branding. Fotos folgen.

Goodbye, Cody!

Am Mittwoch reisten Georgie and Dori ab, dafuer kamen Vanessa und Yvonne. Vanessa war schon 2004 und 2005 hier, hat aber dieses Mal statt Cousine Melanie Freundin Yvonne im Schlepptau. Am Freitag machten sich dann auch Peter und Brigitte auf den Weg. Dafuer kam am Samstag Chris aus Baltimore an, der sich nun schon das dritte Mal ins Ranchabenteuer stuerzt.

On Wednesday Georgie and Dori left while Vanessa and Yvonne arrived. Vanessa had been here in 2004 and 2005 but this time instead of bringing her cousin Melanie she dragged her friend Yvonne out into the middle of nowhere. On Friday Peter and Brigitte took off as well. On Saturday Chris came in from Baltimore. It's his third time as a cowboy in New Haven.

Am Samstag waren wir alle shoppen und sightseeing, am Sonntag ging es dann zur Pferdeauktion (s. Foto). Wir haben - schweren Herzens - Cody verkauft. Der kleine schwarz-weisse Paint kam einfach nicht mit den wechselnden Reitern zurecht, die es nun mal auf einer Gaesteranch gibt. Wir selbst kaufen nicht mehr auf Auktionen ... man wird zu oft hinters Licht gefuehrt.

Saturday we all went shopping and sightseeing, and on Sunday we drove to a horse sale (s. photo). We sold - sadly - Cody. The little black and white paint could simply not deal with the ever changing riders on a guest ranch. We don't buy horses at auctions anymore ... too many people lie about the horses' health or behavioural problems.

Heute waren alle auf einem langen Viehtrieb. Und auch waehrend Nick und ich in New Mexico waren, gab es viel zu tun auf New Haven. Fotos folgen, sobald ich sie von Petra, Birgit und Britta "geklaut" habe.

Today everyone went on a long cattle drive. And while Nick and I were in new Mexico, there was lots of work to do on New Haven. Photos will follow once I have "stolen" some from Petra, Birgit and Britta.

Der Herbst hat begonnen, das Licht veraendert sich, und die Luft ist klarer denn je. Tagsueber ist es noch sehr warm, aber nicht mehr heiss, und nachts sinken die Temperaturen schnell. Hoffentlich bleibt uns noch etwas Zeit bis zum ersten Schnee.

Fall is beginning, the light has changed and the air is clearer than ever. During the day it is still warm but not hot and the nights are cooling off quite a bit. Hopefully there is still some time till the first snow.

Auf dem Dach Wyomings / On Wyoming's roof

Waehrend Anthony unsere neuen Gaeste, Klaus (war 2005 schon mal hier), seine Nichte Claudia und die Schweizer Hannes und Heini, einwies, wollte Silke Bodenarbeit mit Cody machen ... Also brachen Gisela, Sabine und ich allein auf auf einen wunderschoenen Ritt durch majestaetische Landschaft.

While Anthony introduced our new guests - Klaus (was here in 2005), his niece Claudia, and the Swiss Hannes and Heini - to the program, Silke prefered to do ground work with Cody ... So Gisela, Sabine and I took off for a beautiful ride across majestic nature.

Ich bin endlich mal wieder meinen Liebling Romes geritten. Von oben sieht er auch nicht haesslich aus ;-) Sabine ritt Chocolate, Gisela Juno. Fotos anbei.

Diese Woche fand auch die groesste Motorrad-Rally der Welt statt, die Sturgis-Rally, bei der hauptsaechlich Harley Davidson-Fahrer teilnehmen. Auf der Ranch merken wir nichts davon, aber die Strassen waren voll.

This week the world's biggest motorcycle rally took place, the Sturgis rally with mostly Harley Davidson riders. On the ranch one did not notice anything but the roads were full.

Heute Nachmittag waren alle unterwegs, zu Pferde natuerlich, um Zaeune abzubauen. Mal sehen, wie es ihnen ergangen ist ...

This afternoon everyone was out, on horseback, to take down fence. Have to see how they have been doing ...

Codys Geschichte / Cody's story

Als ich von einem Spaziergang zurueck zur Ranch kam, wartete Cody schon auf mich. Den Flieger am Himmel habe ich erst spaeter auf dem Foto gesehen. Die Pferde sind alle auf Weide. Wir halten zurzeit nur Romes (der aufgrund seines Alters mehr Futter benoetigt), Nellie (Emmetts Pony) und Cody im Korral. Cody war lange das Zeit das ideale Anfaengerpferd ... bis zu dem Tag, an dem er explodierte.

When I came back to the ranch after a walk, Cody was waiting for me. I did not see the plane till later when I looked at the photo. The horses are on pasture. We only keep Romes (who needs extra feed due to his age), Nellie (Emmett's pony) and Cody in the corral. Cody had been the ideal beginner's horse ... till the day he exploded.

Manchmal bockte er schon beim Fuehren am Seil, spaetestens aber beim Aufsteigen. Was war passiert? Nachdem wir koerperliche Ursachen ausgeschlossen hatten, war mir klar: Cody hat ein mentales Problem, und dank Pat und Linda Parelli weiss ich, wie ich damit umgehen kann. Man muss sich das als den Tropfen vorstellen, der Fass zum Ueberlaufen brachte. Jetzt muessen wir erstmal das ganze Fass leeren. Cody und ich haben in den vergangenen Wochen schon grosse Fortschritte gemacht ... der Erfolg kommt nicht ueber Nacht, weil gute Dinge Zeit brauchen ... und auch ich noch am Lernen bin. Irgendwann werde ich einen ausfuehrlichen Bericht auf unsere Homepage stellen. Doch eines kann ich jetzt schon sagen: Parelli Natural Horsemanship (http://www.parellinaturalhorsetraining.com) hat nicht nur mein Verhaeltnis zu Pferden veraendert, sondern mein gesamtes Leben.

Sometimes he already bucked when led on the rope, at latest when mounted. What had happened? After we ruled out physical causes, I was sure: Cody had a mental problem and thanks to Pat and Linda Parelli I know how to deal with it. You have to think of it as the straw that broke the camel's back. Now we have to take the whole load off and repair the back. Cody and I have made quite a bit of progress during the last few weeks ... but success does not come overnight ... good things take time ... and I am still learning as well. At some point I will write on our homepage about it. But one thing I can tell you right now: Parelli Natural Horsemanship (http://www.parellinaturalhorsetraining.com) did not only change my relationship with horses but my whole life.
