Yeehaw!

Auf der Ranch merken wir von der beruehmten Sturgis Motorrad-Ralley nichts, aber an einem Tag haben wir uns mit unseren Gaesten unter die Massen begeben, was dann auch sehr unterhaltsam war, siehe Foto unten.

On the ranch we don't notice the famous Sturgis motorcycle rally but for one day we and our guests joined the masses which turned out to be quite entertaining as the photo below shows.

Mit tatkraeftiger Hilfe von Anne-Marie aus England und den schwedischen Schwestern Linda und Sandra hat Nick begonnen, Leftie „einzufahren“ (Foto s.u.). Im Fruehjahr hatten wir bereits Geschirr und einen Wagen von den Amish gekauft. So einfach, wie es ausschaut, ist es dann doch nicht, aber Leftie macht (fast) alles mit ... und traegt sogar vier kichernde Frauen mit Fassung (Foto s.u.).

With hands-on help from Brit Anne-Marie and Swedish sisters Linda and Sandra Nick started to "drive" Leftie (photo below). In spring we had already bought the harness and cart from the Amish. It's not exactly as easy as it looks but Leftie was game for (almost) anything ... and even carried four giggling women without freaking out (photo below).

Die Fotos sind ein Querschnitt durch unsere August-Arbeit in den Bergen und in der Prairie. Und ein paar Brandings gab es auch noch. Sandy aus New Hampshire forderte Nick zu einem barrel Race heraus: sie auf dem Pferd, Nick auf dem Motorrad. Nick gewann knapp, aber nur weil er geschummelt hatte. The pics are a cross section of our August work in the hills and in the prairie. And we had another few brandings. Sandy from New Hampshire challenged Nick to barrel race with her: she on a horse and he on his dirt bike. Nick won but barely and only because he cheated. Ich habe mich zu frueh gefreut: Anstatt langsam in den Herbst ueberzugehen, hat der Sommer jetzt noch mal mit Temperaturen bis 40 Grad voll aufgedreht. Anja ist wieder in New Haven, und Ann-Catrin, Sonja und Nick streichen gerade alle Gebaeude. Lance ist 25 geworden, und sein Freund Travis kam aus Florida zu Besuch. Einer unserer Bullen wurde vom Blitz getroffen. Die Geier haben ihn in wenigen Tagen auf sein Fell reduziert. Den bestialischen Gestank muss ich sicher nicht erwaehnen.

I felt safe too early: Instead of slowly slipping into fall, summer has come back full throttle with temps of close to a 100 degrees. Anja has returned to New Haven and Ann-Catrin, Sonja and Nick are painting all the buildings. Lance became 25 and his friend Travis came for a visit from Florida. One of our bulls got killed by lightning. The vultures reduced him to his fur within a few days. I am sure I don't have to mention the terrible smell.

Viele unserer Kaelber leiden an "Pink Eye", einer Krankheit, die zum Erblinden fuehrt. Die meisten Mutterkuehe haben Antikoerper entwickelt und sind zumeist nur noch stille Traeger der Bakterien, die von Fliegen von einem Tier aufs andere uebertragen werden. Im Spaetsommer sind die Augen der Kaelber durch Hitze, Staub und Graeserpollen besonders anfaellig fuer die Krankheit. Deshalb haben wir am Sonntag alle Rinder zusammengetrieben und behandelt.

Many of our calves suffer from "Pink Eye", a disease which leads to blindness. Most of the mother cows have developed anti bodies and are only silent carriers of the bacteria which are transferred by flies from one animal to the other. In late summer the calves' eyes are more susceptible to the disease due to heat, dust and grass pollen. On Sunday we gathered all cattle and treated them.

Nicks Bruder Dave und seine Familie aus Texas sowie Brandy, Kinder und ihr schwedisches Au-pair Amanda waren auf Besuch. Wir haben ein Rodeo besucht und sind per Pferd nach Hulett geritten (s. letzter Blog). Mit dabei waren neben Tine, Sabine und Karyl auch Stefanie und ihr Vater Dieter aus Oesterreich, Ida und ihre Mutter Anne aus Schweden und Miriam aus Deutschland. Ausserdem Ann-Catrin, Sonja, Anja, Amanda, Lance und Owen.

Nick's brother Dave and his family from Texas as well as Brandy, kids and their Swedish nanny Amanda were visiting. We went to a rodeo and rode into Hulett on horseback (s. last blog). Participating: Tine, Sabine and Karyl as well as Stefanie and her father Dieter from Austria, Ida and her mother Anne from Sweden and Miriam from Germany. Also Ann-Catrin, Sonja, Anja, Amanda, Lance and Owen.

Seit diesem Samstag sind Clemens und Ilse aus Oesterreich, Rolf und Petra aus Bayern, Sidney und Hilary aus Nordirland, Julie aus Iowa und Janine aus Deutschland hier. Tine und Sabine nicht zu erwaehnen, die gehoeren ja schon zum Inventar. Diese Woche stehen noch zwei Brandings an. Auf auf !

Since Saturday Clemens and Ilse from Austria, Rolf and Petra from Bavaria, Sidney and Hilary from Northern Ireland, Julie from Iowa and Janine from Germany are visiting. Not to mention Tine and Sabine who are inventory by now. This week we will go to two brandings. Cowboy up !

Melissa (We keep our fingers crossed for Australia!), Moa, Martin, Vergil, Nicole and Maria have already left. On Saturday Tine, Sabine and Karyl got company from Stefanie and Dieter from Austria, Ida and Anne from Sweden and Miriam from Germany.

Momentan probieren wir eine graue Stute namens Tequila aus (Foto s.o. unter Tine). Mal schaun ... Snickers hatte eine Hufabzess, er erholt sich aber schnell.

Right now we are trying out a grey mare named Tequila (photo above, under Tine). We'll see ... Snickers had a hoof absess but is recovering quickly. 

Am Montag wird Lisa abreisen ... Cowgirl, wir werden Dich wirklich vermissen! Vergiss' uns nicht, und komm' mal wieder!

On Monday Lisa will leave ... Cowgirl, we will really miss you! Don't forget us and come back some time!
