Quadratisch, praktisch, gut ... das sind unsere Kaltblutmixe Leftie und Poncho. Habe gerade eine DVD von Andreas (Lisas Vater) erhalten und kann mich gar nicht entscheiden, welche Bilder am schoensten sind.

Square, practical, great (this is the slogan for a popular German chocolate bar) ... that fits our draft horse mixes Leftie and Poncho. Just got a DVD from Andreas (Lisa's father) and cannot decide which pics are the best.

Anthony, Andy, Hannes und Heini sind bei sengender Hitze nach Hulett aufgebrochen, natuerlich zu Pferde. Heute findet "Ride a horse, feed a cowboy" statt. Wer Lust hat, reitet von seiner Ranch in die Stadt (in unserem Fall 30 Kilometer) und wird dort kostenlos verkoestigt. Es findet danach eine Auktion fuer einen guten Zweck statt mit nachfolgendem Tanz. Nick, Brandy, Emmett, Jo und ich werden demnaechst mit dem Trailer hinterherfahren, damit die Cowboys ihr Bier geniessen und die Pferde mit dem Taxi nach Hause fahren koennen. Anthony, Andy, Hannes and Heini left for Hulett in flaming heat, on horseback of course. Today it's "Ride a horse, feed a cowboy". People can ride from their ranches into town (in our case 20 miles) and will receive a free meal. There will be an auction afterwards to collect money for cowboys in need with a dance after that. Nick, Brandy, Emmett, Jo and I will leave soon with the trailer so the cowboys can enjoy their beer and the horses their ride home in a taxi. Schweizer Cowboys auf Abwegen / Swiss cowboys went astray

Und wir dachten, da kommen zwei grundsolide Schweizer zu Besuch ... hier seht Ihr, wie wir uns getaeuscht haben: Hannes und Heini und einige ehrenwerte Damen in Deadwood. Zur Verteidgung der Herren muss gesagt werden, dass sie zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon grosse Mengen ihres Grundnahrungsmittels - Bier - konsumiert hatten ;-)

And there we thought that our Swiss guests were really solid guys ... here you can see how wrong we were: Hannes and Heini and some of Deadwood's leading ladies. In their defense I have to say that the guys had already consumed huge amounts of their staple food - beer ;-)

Nick und ich fuhren gestern Claudia, Silke, Gisela und Sabine zum Flughafen *schluchz* ... und verbrachten dann den Rest des Tages im Baumarkt, da nun ein neues Projekt - die Erweiterung der Lodge - ansteht. Nick ist in seinem Element. Und da wir nicht fertig wurden, haben wir in einem Motel uebernachtet und sind jetzt wieder auf dem Weg zum Baumarkt *yipeeh*

Yesterday, Nick and I drove Claudia, Silke, Gisela and Sabine to the airport *cry* ... and then spent the rest of the day at the building center since now Nick has a new project - expanding the lodge. He took to it like a duck to water - as usual. And since we did not finish, we stayed in a motel. Now we are on our way to the building center again *yipeeh*

Reiten, reiten, reiten / Riding, riding, riding

Reiten, reiten, reiten ... und auch noch zahlreiche Viehtriebe, bei Nachbarn und - heute - wieder bei uns. Leider kann Silke nicht dabei sein, weil ihr Knie so weh tut. Dafuer macht sie sich ueberall sonst nuetzlich .. wenn sie morgen - mit Sabine, Gisela und Claudia - wieder abreist, werden wir es merken. Nick und ich sind heute Abend zum Grillen bei Heike eingeladen, deren Eltern gerade aus Deutschland zu Besuch sind. Anbei ein paar schoene Fotos von Pferden und Menschen.

Riding, riding, riding ... and also many cattle drives, with neigbors and at New Haven - like today. Unfortunately Silke cannot participate because her knee hurts. But she is helping in all other area ... once she leaves tomorrow - with Sabine, Gisela and Claudia, we'll certainly notice it. Nick and I are invited for a BBQ at Heike's who's parents are visiting from Germany. Attached a few beautiful pics of horses and people.

Sommertage / Summer days

Eigentlich sollten hier ganz andere Fotos zu sehen sein ... ich habe Mittwoch, Donnerstag und Freitag mehr oder weniger im Buero verbracht, was aufgrund der Hitze nicht ganz sooo schlimm war, waehrend unsere Gaeste Abenteuer erlebt haben. Doch momentan bekomme ich die Fotos nicht von den anderen Kameras auf mein Laptop ... hoffentlich klappt es bis morgen. Dann folgen auch Details.

Actually you were supposed to see other photos here ... I worked most of Wedndesday, Thursday and Friday in the office - which was not tooo bad in this heat - while our guests survived adventures. But right now I have problems getting their pics onto my laptop ... hopefully I have figured it out by tomorrow. Then you'll get the details as well.

Gestern bin ich mit allen zum Sightseeing und Shoppen gefahren. Mittags waren wir bei Sandford's in Spearfish (s. Foto oben, v.l.n.r.: Sabine, Hannes, Silke, Andy, Claudia, Heini, Gisela), dann im Spearfish Canyon auf den Spuren Kevin Costners (s. zweites Foto, drauf klicken zum Vergroessern), und abends ging es nach Deadwood ... und da liess ich meine Kamera dummerweise im Auto und habe die interessantesten Motive verpasst ... doch dazu spaeter.

Yesterday I took everyone sightseeing and shopping. For lunch we went to Sandfords in Spearfish (s. photo, from left to right: Sabine, Hannes, Silke, Andy, Claudia, Heini, Gisela), then drove through Spearfish Canyon on Kevin Costner's tracks (s. second photo, click to enlarge) and on to Deadwood ... where I left my camera in the car and missed the most interesting motives ... more about that later.

Klaus musste aufgrund einer Rueckenverletzung fruehzeitig abreisen. Wir hoffen, dass er gut zu Hause angekommen ist. Anthony, Sabine, Gisela, Claudia, Hannes und Heini treiben heute zweihundert Kuehe und ihre Kaelber von einer Koppel in die naechste. Hoert sich einfach an, aber ... die Koppel, in der die Rinder zusammengetrieben werden muessen, ist ca. 500 Hektar gross, was sich Europaeer meist gar nicht vorstellen koennen, und das Gelaende ist rauh und unwegsam ... hoffentlich faellt uns bei 40 Grad keiner vom Pferd ;-)

Klaus had to leave early because of a back injury. We hope he arrived home safely. Today Anthony, Sabine, Gisela, Claudia, Hannes and Heini are moving 200 cows and their calves from one pasture into another. Sounds easy but ... the pasture they have to gather is more than a 1000 acres big, something Europeans (and many Americans) cannot imagine. And the terrain is rough and rugged ... hopefully no one will fall off the horse at 100 degrees F ;-)

Nick baut gerade Tore fuer seine neue Heuscheune, und Silke, deren Knie weh tut, hilft ihm dabei, waehrend ich Buchhaltung mache. Unten ein Bild von der leeren Scheune und eines von der halb vollen Scheune. Mittlerweile passt kein Ballen mehr hinein, und dabei haben wir dieses Jahr gar nicht so viel Heu.

Nick is building doors for his hay barn and Silke who's knee is hurting is helping him while I do accounting. Below a pic from the empty barn and another one from when it was half full. By now it's all filled and we did not even have that much hay this year.

Viel Platz / Lots of space

Gluehende Hitze und kein Baum weit und breit ... das ist die Praerie! Wir mussten ca. 1000 Rinder treiben, die sich nicht sehr kooperativ zeigten und uns in Trab (und Galopp) hielten. Wir, das sind: Nick auf Poncho, Andy auf Newt, Claudia auf Pal, Klaus auf Buster, Heini auf Pep, Hannes auf Tucker, Sabine auf Chocolate, Gisela auf Juno, Silke auf Rena und ich auf Jazz. Brandon war auf dem ATV dabei. Fotos oben (Klaus) und unten.

Flaming heat and no tree in sight ... this is the prairie! We had to move 1,000 head of cattle which were not very co-operative and kept us trotting (and cantering). We, that is: Nick on Poncho, Andy on Newt, Claudia on Pal, Klaus on Buster, Heini on Pep, Hannes on Tucker, Sabine on Chocolate, Gisela on Juno, Silke on Rena, and I on Jazz. Mit dem Pferdekauf danach wurde es nichts, da die entsprechenden Pferde alle noch zu "gruen" waren. Waren um 21 Uhr zu Hause und alle hundemuede. Aber das Ranchleben geht weiter: Heute steht der naechste Viehtrieb bei uns auf New Haven an. Ausser fuer die Rancher, die auch mal wieder richtige Arbeit erledigen muessen ;-)

We did not buy any horses afterwards because they were still too green. Came home at 9 pm and were all tired. But ranch life goes on: today another cattle drive on New Haven. Only the ranchers cannot go, they have to do some real work ;-)

Cowboys und Indianer / Cowboys and Indians

Heute einfach mal ein paar vermischte Bilder, bevor ich Euch morgen unsere neuen Gaeste vorstelle. Wir werden in Sued-Dakota reiten und danach noch ein Pferd kaufen (oder mehrere). Die Heusaison ist beendet, und Nick und ich werden mitfahren und endlich mal wieder gemeinsam reiten.

Today some pics, I will present the new guests tomorrow. We'll be riding in South Dakota and hopefully buy a horse on the way home (or more). The hay season is finished and Nick and I will go, too and finally ride together again.

Allen geht es gut, sie haben heute morgen Nachbars Rinder aus den unserigen herausgecuttet. Heute Abend grillen wir am See. Das Wetter ist herrlich, sonnig, aber nicht zu heiss ... das gefaellt einer Norddeutschen wie mir ... nur gewisse Leute aus Frankfurt lieben Temperaturen ueber 30 Grad.

Everyone is fine, this morning they cut neighbor's cattle out of ours. This evening we'll be grilling at the lake. The weather is beautiful, sunny but not too hot ... enjoyable for a Northern German like me ... only some people in Frankfurt love temps over 90 degrees.

Oben seht Ihr, wie man ein Tipi professionell aufbaut (Brandy und Thomas) ... ob die Indianer das auch so machen? Danach ein Foto auf dem Weg zum Flughafen ... schaut Euch den Beifahrer ganz genau an! Dann folgt ein kleiner Cowboy for Ziegenherde. Und auf den letzten drei Bildern seht Ihr einige unserer hart arbeitenden Angestellten! Ach ja, und dann noch ein Foto mit Pferden ... Pferde?

Auf dem Dach Wyomings / On Wyoming's roof

Waehrend Anthony unsere neuen Gaeste, Klaus (war 2005 schon mal hier), seine Nichte Claudia und die Schweizer Hannes und Heini, einwies, wollte Silke Bodenarbeit mit Cody machen ... Also brachen Gisela, Sabine und ich allein auf auf einen wunderschoenen Ritt durch majestaetische Landschaft.

While Anthony introduced our new guests - Klaus (was here in 2005), his niece Claudia, and the Swiss Hannes and Heini - to the program, Silke prefered to do ground work with Cody ... So Gisela, Sabine and I took off for a beautiful ride across majestic nature.

Ich bin endlich mal wieder meinen Liebling Romes geritten. Von oben sieht er auch nicht haesslich aus ;-) Sabine ritt Chocolate, Gisela Juno. Fotos anbei.

Diese Woche fand auch die groesste Motorrad-Rally der Welt statt, die Sturgis-Rally, bei der hauptsaechlich Harley Davidson-Fahrer teilnehmen. Auf der Ranch merken wir nichts davon, aber die Strassen waren voll.

This week the world's biggest motorcycle rally took place, the Sturgis rally with mostly Harley Davidson riders. On the ranch one did not notice anything but the roads were full.

Heute Nachmittag waren alle unterwegs, zu Pferde natuerlich, um Zaeune abzubauen. Mal sehen, wie es ihnen ergangen ist ...

This afternoon everyone was out, on horseback, to take down fence. Have to see how they have been doing ...
