Januar ist Buchhaltungsmonat *grummel* Aber gestern hatte ich ein Ausrede, um zumindest ein paar Stunden aus dem Buero zu fliehen. Heike hatte sich angemeldet, um ein paar Ballen Heu abzuholen. Natuerlich haben wir die Herde gecheckt (Heike und ich schauen uns so gern Pferde an wie andere Frauen Schuhe oder Handtaschen ;-) Dann haben wir zusammen mit Nick gefuettert. Morgen soll ein Blizzard durchs Land ziehen. Da bleibt man besser zu Hause ... und macht mehr Buchhaltung. Vielleicht habe ich ja das Glueck, dass der Strom ausfaellt und wir nicht am PC arbeiten koennen ...

January is bookkeeping month *grrr* But yesterday I had an excuse to get away from the office for a few hours. Heike had called, she wanted to pick up some bales of hay. We checked the herd, of course (Heike and I enjoy looking at horses as some women enjoy looking at shoes and purses ;-) Then we fed the herd - together with Nick. Tomorrow a blizzard is supposed to go through. One better stays at home ... and does more bookkeeping. Maybe I am lucky enough that we'll have a power outage and cannot work on the computer ...

Das harte Leben eines Ranchers / The hard life of a rancher

Da wir erst am Donnerstag aus Montana zurueckgekehrt sind, hatte ich keine Lust, dieses Jahr wieder eine Silvesterparty fuer die Nachbarschaft zu organisieren. Nick und ich sind stattdessen nach Gillette zu einem Rodeo gefahren, das erstaunlich gut war - nur bockende Pferde und Bullen und ziemlich gute Cowboys. Danach spielten Chancey Williams und die Younger Brothers zum Westerntanz auf. Ausserhalb des Wilden Westens ist es ein seltener Anblick, aber hier tanzen Paare von 18 bis 80 zusammen - schnell und wild oder langsam und gesetzt, jeder in seiner Fasson.

Since we did not return from Montana till Thursday, I did not feel like organizing a New Year's Eve party for the neighborhood again this year. Instead Nick and I drove to a rodeo in Gillette which was amazingly good - just bucking horses and bulls and pretty good cowboys. Afterwards Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers played their Western dance music. Other places than here it has become rare but here in the Wild West it is common for couples from 18 to 80 to dance together - fast and wild or slow and safe, everyone as they can and want to.

Am ersten Tag des neuen Jahres haben wir uns von JoAnn fuettern lassen und waren wir im Schneetreiben im Polaris auf der Ranch unterwegs. Als wir voellig verfroren zurueckkamen, ging's gleich in den Whirlpool ... waehrend der Schnee um uns herumwehte. Was fuer ein hartes Leben ;-)

On the first day of the new year we got ourselves fed by JoAnn and then toured the ranch in the Polaris in falling snow. When we came home, we were very cold and jumped into the hot tub ... while the snow fell around us. What a hard life ;-)

Uebrigens: Wir haben nun auch Savannah verkauft, da wir sie immer beschlagen mussten. Sie wird auch ein Kinderpferd werden und ein Luxusleben fuehren. Das macht die Trennung leichter.

By the way: We have also sold Savannah since we always had to shoe her. She will be a kid's horse as well and will have a good life. This makes separating from her easier.

Eisige Tage in Montana / Icy days in Montana

Wir - Nick, Nicks Mutter JoAnn und ich - haben Weihnachten bei Brandy, Brandon, Emmett und Garrett in Montana verbracht. Auf der Ranch, die Brandon jetzt managt. Mit dabei waren auch Brandons Eltern Kathy und Mike. Da ich gerade Smokey, Heikes Hund, babysitte und ihn und Gauge nicht allein zu Hause lassen wollte, waren auch sie mit von der Partie ... und fanden in Billie und Luna, Brandys und Brandons Hunden, willige Spielgefaehrten.

We - Nick, Nick's mother JoAnn and I - spent Christmas with Brandy, Brandon, Emmett and Garrett in Montana. On the ranch which Brandon is managing now. Brandon's parents, Kathy and Mike, were there, too. Since I am babysitting Smokey, Heike's dog, and did not want to leave him and Gauge alone at home, they joined us as well ... and found willing playmates in Billie and Luna, Brandy's and Brandon's dogs.

Endlich konnte ich auch Patch und Scotch wiedersehen, die bei Brandy als Ab-und-zu Reitpferde ihren Lebensabend verbringen. Ausserdem gehoert - wie bereits berichtet - Dun It (jetzt Roy) zur Herde. Esel Cisco verbringt den Winter hier, um als Roping Dummy zu dienen. Und dann ist da noch Emmetts Fohlen Bonita.

I could finally see Patch and Scotch again who are spending their retirement as once-in-a-while riding horses at Brandy's. And as mentioned before, Dun It (now Roy) is part of the herd as well. Donkey Cisco is spending the winter in Montana as a roping dummy. And then there is Emmett's filly Bonita.

Mit im Gepaeck hatten wir einen lebendigen Hahn fuer Brandys einziges Huhn, gefrorene Gaensebrueste fuers Abendessen und einen Tannenbaum ... denn auf der fast 20.000 Hektar grossen Ranch gibt es keine Baeume.

On the truck we also brought a live rooster for Brandy's single chicken, frozen goose breasts for supper and a Christmas tree ... since there are no trees on this 55,000 acre big ranch.

Kaum angelangt, fielen die Temperaturen ins Bodenlose. Wir mussten uns sehr warm anziehen, bevor wir raus gingen ... und genossen danach das warme Haus umso mehr. Nick und Brandon waren viel unterwegs, um unsere gemeinsamen Kuehe zu checken, die hier kalben sollten, bevor sie nach New Haven kommen. Insgesamt sehr entspannte Weihnachten ... obwohl ich natuerlich zu viel gegessen habe.

We were just there when the temperature fell rapidly. We had to put on several layers when going out ... and enjoyed the warm house the more after that. Nick and Brandon were gone part of the time to check on our joint cow herd. The cows are supposed to calf here before coming to New Haven. Altogether a very relaxing Christmas ... even though I ate too much.

Mehr ueber die drei Neuen / More about the three new ones

Twister

Twister, der Paint, und Apache, der Apaloosa, sind beides grosse Dreijaehrige mit weichen Gaengen und einer sehr freundlichen Persoenlichkeit. Doch waehrend Apache eher ruhig und zurueckhaltend ist, ist Twister sensibel und hat Temperament. Rappe Playboy ist bereits sechs Jahre alt und hat viel Gelaendeerfahrung. Er ist eher ein Anfaengerpferd, das aber auch Fortgeschrittenen gefallen wird. Und auch er hat butterweiche Gaenge. Darauf haben wir besonders geachtet, da nicht jeder Warmblutgaenge wie die von Vegas oder Sunny sitzen kann.

Twister, the Paint, and Apache, the Apaloosa, are both big three-year olds with smooth gaits and a very friendly personality. But while Apache is more quiet and reserved, Twister is sensitive and has some temperament. Playboy, the black horse, is already six years old and has quite a bit of trail experience. He is more for beginners but intermediate riders will like him, too. He also has smooth gaits. This is something we paid attention to about since not everyone can ride warmblood gaits like Vegas' and Sunny's.

Dafuer haben wir heute Classy als Kinderpferd an eine pferdekundige Familie verkauft. Sorry, Rita! Die harte Arbeit bei uns auf der Ranch haette Classy, die bereits 18 wird, kaputt gemacht. Schon diesen Sommer brauchte sie oefter Pausen. Jetzt hat sie - wie auch Grover, den wir vor drei Jahren als Kinderpferd an Nachbarn verkauft haben - hoffentlich noch viele gute Jahre vor sich.

Today we sold Classy as a kid's horse to an equine-knowledgable family. Sorry, Rita! The hard ranch work would have destroyed Classy, who is going to be 18, pretty soon. This summer she already needed breaks once in a while. Now she hopefully has - like Grover who we sold as a kid's horse to neighbors three years ago - many good years ahead of her.

Am Freitag haben Nick und ich Gaense und Huehner geschlachtet, d.h. Nick hat geschlachtet, ich habe das Fleisch gereinigt und verpackt ... und geheult.

On Friday Nick and I butchered geese and chickens, that is Nick butchered and I cleaned and wrapped the meat ... and cried.

Wir wuenschen Euch allen frohe Weihnachten und alles Gute fuers neue Jahr ... gluecklicherweise ist die Welt ja trotz aller Vorhersagen noch nicht untergegangen. Und auch wenn sie untergeht, bekommen wir das hier in Wyoming erst ein paar Tage spaeter mit :-)

We wish all of you a merry Christmas and the best for the next year ... fortunately enough the world did not go under despite all the negative predictions. And even if the world does go under, we won't know here in Wyoming till a few days later :-)

Viele neue Pferde / Lots of new horses

Nick hat unseren kleinen Buckskin Dun It Brandy gegeben und dafuer von ihr einen grossen Rabicano-Wallach namens Kadoka bekommen, den er selbst reiten will. Poncho koennte also frei werden fuer den Gaestebetrieb. Nun muss ich wieder einen Bucksin suchen ... und einen Blue Roan ... und ...

Nick gave our little Buckskin Dun It to Brandy and in exchange got a big Rabicano gelding named Kadoka from her, which he wants to ride himself. Poncho may become a guest horse after all. Now I have to find another buckskin ... and a blue roan ... and ...

Da wir einige Pferde aus Altersgruenden als Kinderpferde verkaufen muessen *schluchz*, haben wir gestern drei neue junge Pferde gekauft. Auf dem Foto unten seht Ihr Twister (Bay Tobiano Paint), Apache (Apaloosa) und Playboy (Rappe). Diese Fotos sind vom Sommer. Werde in den naechsten Tagen noch weitere Fotos machen ... aber Achtung: Momentan sehen alle drei aus wie Wollmammuths.

Since we have to sell some older horses as kids horses *cry*, we bought three new young horses yesterday. On the photo below you see Twister (Bay Tobiano Paint), Apache (Apaloosa) and Playboy (black). The photos are from summer. Will take some more pics in the next few days ... but be aware: Right now all three look like wooly mammoths.

Ryan kommt, Romina ist wieder da, Pearl geht / Ryan comes, Romina is back, Pearl leaves

Chica mal wieder vorweg ... / Chica in the lead again ...

Von Kadoka, Bruno und Pearl abgesehen, die wir direkt an der Ranch halten, fuettern wir die Pferde immer noch nicht mit Heu. Es ist erstaunlich, wie gut sie ihr Gewicht halten. Das liegt allerdings auch daran, dass es bisher noch nicht sehr kalt war - fuer Wyomingsche Verhaeltnisse. Die Herde ist viel unterwegs, um Gras zu finden ... ganz so wie Pferde leben sollten ... auch wenn ich sie lieber verwoehnen wuerde.

Except from Kadoka, Bruno and Pearl who are right at the ranch, we are still not feeding the horses with hay. It is amazing how well they keep. This is also due to the mild weather - mild for Wyoming anyway. The herd is moving a lot to find grass ... just the way horses are supposed to live ... even though I'd rather spoil them.

Pearl wird am Samstag von Ryan abgeholt, die von Chicago nach Hulett zieht. Und ich darf wieder neue Pferde kaufen ... *yipeeh* Und fuer alle, die sie kennen: Romina ist auch wieder hier.

Ryan, who is moving from Chicago to Hulett, will pick up Pearl on Saturday. And I am allowed to buy new horses ... *yipeeh* And to everyone who knows her: Romina is back as well.

Am Samstag findet die New Haven Weihnachtsfeier statt, wo sich alle Nachbarn treffen ... und als Nachbarn bezeichnet man ja auch noch die, die bis zu einer Stunde entfernt wohnen. Ansonsten kaemen nicht allzu viele Gaeste ;-)

On Saturday we'll have the New Haven Christmas Party where all the neighbors meet ... and we call everyone a neighbor who lives up to one hour away. Otherwise there would not be many guests ;-)

Keine Angst, Schmusi (s.u.), Weihnachten wird es Gaensebraten geben. Von unseren eigenen Gaensen. Ich finde das voellig okay, denn unsere Tiere leben artgerecht. Und Fleisch in Massen (mir fehlt das "sz") - insbesondere aus artgerechter Haltung - halte ich auch fuer gesund. Immerhin sind wir Allesfresser. Aber leider machen mir meine Gefuehle trotzdem einen Strich durch die Rechnung, und ich bin ernsthaft am Ueberlegen, Vegetarierin zu werden. Aber vorher muss ich noch die Gaense aussuchen, die dran glauben muessen ... irgendwie gemein.

Don't worry, Schmusi (see below), we will eat goose for Christmas. One or more of our geese. I think it's totally okay since our animals are kept species-appropriate. And meat if eaten in small amounts can be healthy, too - especially if animals are kept right. Last but not least we are omnivores. But nevertheless my feelings for my critters get the better of me and I am seriously thinking about becoming a vegetarian. But before I still have to pick out the geese that won't make it past Christmas ... pretty mean.

Ansonsten ist viel Bueroarbeit angesagt. Werde aber trotzdem noch mal mit Gauge rausgehen und die Pferde suchen ... falls er mir das mit der Schleife bis dahin vergeben hat.

Other than that: lots of office work. But later I will go out with Gauge and look for the horses ... if Gauge has forgiven me for the ribbon by then.
