Wird Red ueberleben? / Will Red survive?

For the last few months our longhorn cow has been looking like she was about to give birth, her tummy got bigger and bigger ... while she got weaker and weaker. Yesterday Nick pushed her to the ground (our hunters Alan and Dan kept her there). We probably should have intervened earlier but normally mother nature takes care of herself.

Here Nick is feeling for the calf and then injects drugs to induce the birth - if the calf is still alive or not, he does not know. Hopefully the cow is still strong enough ... so far she only had contractions. And no, vets don't come out here, and certainly not for one single cow.

P.S. When I came home tonite (picked up Heidi and Carlotta in Rapid City), I heard that Nick, Dan and Anke had pulled the calf and it is still alive: a beefalo named "Lucky Dan" ... more tomorrow.

Una Chica buena

Bin heute Chica geritten, unsere neue Stute.

Rode Chica today, our new mare. It should have been an easy ride but the three yearlings which we (Anne, Petra and I) had to bring to the ranch were not co-operative. Thanks to Chica we managed, though. She is fast, turns well and is "cowy", not a beginner's horse due to her sensitivity but safe.

In the afternoon we went sightseeing. On the way back I took the pic of the sunset. Nick and Shannon finished the lodge roof today, on the photo they are still at work. And when I went to town on Saturday, Brandon (on a horse looking out into the prairie), Brandy, Emmett and Anke helped at a branding. On the photo, Emmett is helping to hold a calf's leg: A cowboy's life starts early on.

At the bottom you see our hunters LeRoy and his grandson James with one of their shot antelopes. Without shooting some of them their number would increase without control due to the lack of big numbers of predators and crops planted by men.

Sortieren / Sorting

Some time before our big cattle drive on Friday 30 or so of our yearlings had gotten onto neighbor's pasture and mingled with the cows, calves and bulls there. Yesterday Nick, Anke, Petra, Anne and I took of to cut the strays out of neighbor's herd and move them to another neighbor's ranch. We rode for seven hours and were not only finished with our work after that but also physically.

Above you see Anne (on Tucker), Petra (on Buster) and Anke (on Ginger) with the yearlings just before reaching our destination. Below Nick, Anke, Anne and Petra on their way onto the plateau. Then Nick and Poncho resting and last but not least I on KC on the last few yards ...

Bernadette

It is still very warm but a lot more quiet than in summer. Gauge and I just sat on the porch for an hour watching the landscape ... less green and much more red, yellow and shades of brown.

Lisa and Diane have left, Petra and Anne arrived (from Germany). Our antilope hunters, James and LeRoy, shot their bucks and are trout fishing today. Nick and Shannon, our new carpenter, are about to finish shingling the lodge roof. The "girls" - Heike, Anke, Petra and Anne - are out riding.

Above a pic of Bernadette, our beefalo calf ... she has changed a lot and does now look really funny ... neither buffalo nor cow.

This cowboy way of life ...

Our neighbors were on time, 8 am: Mark, Reuben, Travis, Philip, Tim, Wes, Grant, Ryan and Sharla. Nick had to guide antilope hunters who had arrived yesterday. And for Lisa and Diane the ride was a bit too demanding. So only Brandy, Anke and I went.

Wyoming - like no place on earth!

It took almost five hours to gather our cattle and bring it across several mountain ridges to Mark's ranch where they'll be shipped in a few days. Attached a few pics of a wonderful cattle drive in beautiful weather. Wyoming - like no place on earth!

Ciscos Rettung, Chicas Ankunft und Baileys Diagnose / Cisco's rescue, Chica's arrival and Bailey's diagnosis

I will tell you right away: I had forgotten my camera, of course. Diane who met us later had her's but no computer on this ranch can read Olympus cards ... Diane will email the pics after returning to Baltimore. What I am talking about? Monday morning Nick gathered the horses. I noticed that Cisco, the donkey, was missing but thought that Nick had left him on the pasture on purpose. And when I remembered Cisco again, it was already dark.

The next morning Cisco was missing again ... Brandy went out with Diane and Lisa to look: in vain. In the afternoon Anke and I rode out to search the canyons ... Nick and Brandy thought that Cisco got attacked by a mountain lion. I brought a pistol in case I had to put the donkey out of his misery.

I rode on Rena into a deep canyon when suddenly I saw a donkey without legs in front of me ... Cisco had moved into a landslide area and had gotten stuck in the deep, heavy clay up to his belly. He could not move anymore. He brayed when he saw me ... soon Anke was there as well and stayed with him while I got help. There was no way to move any vehicle into the canyon, so Nick came with a shovel, a rope, Diane and Emmett.

It took over an hour to dig Cisco out. His legs were shaky and he was hungry but other than that he seemed fine. A horse may not have survived an ordeal like that. Donkeys are tougher.

The pic above shows Chica, our new dark brown Quarter Horse mare. A neighbor gave her to us for free because she gets lame after 12-hour work days. Our horses don't exactly live an easy life but we usually don't ride more than six hours a day. We'll see ... I played the 7 Games (Parelli) with her today and she learnt easily.

After I had mentioned on Tuesday that I - with Lisa - would bring Bailey to the vet on Wednesday, many of his fans emailed me. Bailey started a fight with another horse (again) and got hurt on his hock. Luckily neither the bone is broke nor the tendon ripped. But the tendon was swollen and needs rest. For Bailey - as for Blade who got recently hurt as well - the season is over. But 2011 they will be on the job again.

Diane invited us all last night into the Crook County Saloon for supper. We had a lot of fun.
