Annika, Sonja und Leonie sind am Samstag abgereist. Freitag waren sie noch mit Lance und Melissa auf einem Nachtritt. Es war so dunkel, dass man die Hand vor Augen nicht sehen konnte. Eine Achterbahnfahrt zu Pferde, bei der einem praktisch die Augen verbunden waren. Alle hatten Herzklopfen ... und waren begeistert ;-)

Annika, Sonja and Leonie left on Saturday. Friday they went on a night ride with Lance and Melissa. It was so dark that you could not see your own hands in front of your eyes. It was a roller coaster ride on horses where your eyes were practically blinded. Everyone's heart was beating faster ... and they were thrilled ;-)

Am Samstag reisten an: Tine und Sabine (yeah!), Moa und Martin aus Schweden, Nicole und Maria aus Bayern und Karyl und Vergil aus den USA. Auf eine schoene Reitwoche!

On Saturday arrived: Tine and Sabine (yeah!), Moa and Martin from Sweden, Nicole and Maria from Bavaria as well as Karyl and Vergil from the US. Let's have a great riding week!

Zur Abwechslung mal Ziegen / Goats for a change

Auf die Fotos von der Motorrad-Ralley muesst Ihr noch etwas warten. Heute waren wir bei einem Ziegen-Docking, wo die Zicklein entwurmt, geimpft, kastriert und mit Ohrmarken versehen wurden. Waehrend Laemmer kaum einen Ton von sich geben, schreien die kleinen Ziegen aus vollem Leibe. Das liegt sicher nicht daran, dass es ihnen mehr weh tut ... Ziegen halten sich nur nicht mit ihrer Meinung zurueck - nie.

You still have to wait a bit for the motorcycle rally pics. Today we were at a goat docking where the goat kids were wormed, vaccinated, castrated and ear tagged. While lambs hardly make a sound, the little goats yell loudly. That's not because they hurt more ... goats are just very vocal and will always tell you exactly how they feel about something.

Karina ist auf dem Weg zurueck in die Schweiz. Leonie, Sonja und Annika muessen am Samstag los. Nur Melissa bleibt noch eine Woche.

Karina is on her way back to Switzerland. Leonie, Sonja and Annika have to leave on Saturday. Just Melissa is going to stay for another week.

Wir koennen uns kein besseres Wetter wuenschen: tagsueber warm, aber selten heiss und nachts regelmaessig Schauer. Viele Gewitter, die aber aufgrund der Feuchtigkeit nur selten Feuer verursachen. Allerdings ist letztens ein Blitz eingeschlagen und hat mal wieder unsere Brunnenpumpe ausser Kraft gesetzt.

We cannot ask for better weather: warm but rarely hot during the day and frequent showers during the night. Many thunderstorms as well but due to the moisture they hardly ever cause fires. Well, lightning hit recently and killed our well pump again.

Wer beobachtet wen? / Who is watching whom?

In dieser Woche hatten wir sieben schwedische Gaeste - Rekord! Eva, Bert, Veronika, Stefan, Josefine, Johanna und Elin. Dazu Melissa aus England und Leonie aus Deutschland. Nach Evas und Berts Abreise am Mittwoch kam - wieder einmal - Sonja an: Optisch koennte auch sie Schwedin sein, aber sobald man sie hoert, tippt man schnell auf Bayern ;-)

This week we had seven Swedish guests - a record! Eva, Bert, Veronika, Stefan, Josefine, Johanna and Elin. Also Melissa from England and Leonie from Germany. After Eva's and Bert's departure on Wednesday, Sonja arrived - once again. She looks like a Swede as well but once she talks, you know she can only be from Bavaria ;-)

Nach einigen weiteren fruehmorgenlichen Dockings in der Praerie sowie Viehtrieben in den Bergen, haben wir uns heute endlich mal wieder Nachbars Bueffelherde angeschaut. Was auf den Fotos leider nicht zu "hoeren" ist, ist wie alle Tiere staendig sanfte Grunzlaute von sich geben  - eine besondere Kommunikation unter Bueffeln.

After another few early morning dockings in the prairie and cattle drives in the hills today we finally visited our neighbor's buffalo herd again. What you cannot "hear" on the pictures is how all the animals repeatedly utter soft grunting noises - a special buffalo communication.

Eigentlich handelt es sich ja nicht um Bueffel, sondern um Bisons, aber die ersten Weissen, die in den amerikanischen Westen kamen, sahen zunaechst nur die Aehnlichkeit zu afrikanischen Bueffeln und wussten noch nicht, dass es sich um eine eigene Gattung handelt.

To be precise, they aren't buffalo but bison but when the first whites came into the American West, they only saw the similarity with African buffalo and did not know, yet that bison are a separate species.  

Morgen fahren wir zum Rodeo nach Deadwood und besuchen danach ein Country Music-Konzert. Und am Samstag reisen alle Schweden wieder ab ... schade!

Tomorrow we'll drive to the rodeo in Deadwood and afterwards visit a country music concert. And on Saturday all Swedes will leave again ... unfortunately!

An Wyoming gewoehnt man sich nie / You never get used to Wyoming

Anja, Jazz und ganz viele Schafe / Anja, Jazz and lots of sheep

Viele Leute meinen, dass ich mich nach zehn Jahren in Wyoming an das Leben hier gewoehnt habe und die Schoenheit dieser Landschaft gar nicht mehr wahrnehme, aber das stimmt nicht. Es vergeht kein Tag, an dem ich nicht die Weite des staendig wechselnden Himmels geniesse, die ohrenbetaeubende Stille an einem heissen Sommertag oder das Heulen eines Blizzards im Winter, den Geruch der Pferde und des frisch geschnittenen Grases und feuchter Erde nach einem Regenguss, das schoene Gefuehl, immer irgendwelche Tiere streicheln zu koennen und durch die leere Landschaft zu reiten, ohne auf Strassen und Fahrzeuge achten zu muessen. Ich weiss mittlerweile nicht mehr, wie ich es so viele Jahre in einer kleinen Wohnung in einer Grossstadt ohne Tiere und in einem Buerojob aushalten konnte. Nein, an Wyoming werde ich mich in diesem Sinne nie "gewoehnen".

Many people think that after ten years in Wyoming, I got used to life here and don't see the beauty of this place anymore but that's not true. There is no day during which I don't enjoy the wide open ever changing sky, the deafening silence of a hot summer day or the howling of a blizzard in winter, the scent of horses and fresh cut grass and the damp soil after a thunderstorm, the comforting feeling of always being able to pet some animals and ride through an empty landscape without having to pay attention to streets and vehicles. I have no idea anymore how I could have stayed in a small apartment in a big city without pets and in an office job for so many years. No, in this sense I will never "get used" to Wyoming.
