Am Mittwoch kam Chuck vorbei, um unsere Schafe zu scheren. Er kam bei den sommerlichen Temperaturen ganz schoen ins Schwitzen. Die Schafe (s.u.) verloren innerhalb von wenigen Minuten bis zu 15 Pfund Wolle ... wuenschte, meine Diaet waere auch so einfach. Die Wolle werde ich am Samstag in die Stadt bringen.

n Wednesday Chuck came out to shear our sheep. He got to sweat quite a bit in the warm temperatures. Within minutes the sheep (see below) lost up to 15 lbs of wool each ... wish my diet would work that easily. I will bring the wool to town on Saturday.
Nachmittags begann Nick, die Waende in unserem Schlafzimmer freizulegen, um es zu isolieren (s.u.). Ich raeumte indessen die Sattelkammern auf, um zu sehen, was repariert und was neu gemacht oder gekauft werden muss, bevor die Saison beginnt.
In the afternoon Nick started to tear down the walls in our bed room to insulate it (see below). I cleaned up the saddle sheds to find out what needs to be repaired, made new or bought before the season begins.
Abends fuhren wir nach Hulett, um uns einen Vortrag ueber Woelfe anzuhoeren. Nachdem Woelfe vor ca. 100 Jahren in Wyoming ausgerottet wurden (in anderen Gegenden der USA wie um die grossen Seen herum, in North Carolina oder in Arizona und New Mexico hat es sie immer gegeben), fuehrte man sie in den 90er Jahren aus Kanada wieder ein: nach Yellowstone, wo sie den Lebensraum des Nationalparks aus biologischer Sicht positiv beeinflusst haben (es hatte dort zu wenig Raubtiere gegeben).
In the evening we drove to Hulett to listen to a speech on wolves. After the last Wyoming wolves were eradicated about 100 years ago (there have always been wolves in other areas of the US like around the big lakes, in North Carolina and in Arizona and New Mexico), Canadian wolves were introduced in the 1990s: in Yellowstone where they - from a biological point of view - have influenced the environment positively (there had been too few predotors there).
Doch leider lassen sich Woelfe nicht von den unsichtbaren Nationalparkgrenzen aufhalten ... sie breiten sich rasend schnell in Idaho, Montana und Wyoming aus. Waehrend in Idaho und Montana Woelfe ausserhalb des Parks geschossen werden duerfen, ist dies in Wyoming noch nicht moeglich.
But unfortunately wolves don't accept the invisible borders of a national park. They are quickly spreading to parts of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. While wolves can be shot in Idaho and Montana (outside of the park), Wyoming does not allow this.
Viele Menschen - insbesondere die, die nicht hier leben - wollen Woelfe vor jeglichem Abschuss schuetzen. Wenn ein Rudel Woelfe Haushunde oder -katzen, Vieh und auch Pferde toetet, dann ist die Liebe zum Wolf allerdings nicht mehr so gross. Nicht zu vergessen die Jaeger (von denen wir u.a. auch leben), die weniger Wild schiessen koennen, weil Woelfe ihnen zuvorgekommen.
Many people - especially people who don't live here - want to protect wolves and let them roam as they chose. When a pack of wolves kills dogs, cats, livestock and even horses, the love for wolves becomes less, though. Not to mention the hunters (who we live of as well) who have less game to shoot because the wolves are faster.
Nick und ich befuerworten ein Wolf-Management, sind uns aber wie viele andere auch noch unschluessig darueber, wie dieses Management genau aussehen soll. Woelfe koennen einen durchaus positiven Einfluss auf unseren Lebensraum haben und wenn man in der Wildnis leben moechte, sollte man auch Raubtiere tolerieren koennen. Aber wollen wir wie bereits immer mehr Menschen im Westen Wyomings in Angst und Schrecken vor Woelfen leben? Man darf auch den wirtschaftlichen Aspekt nicht uebersehen, obwohl der Staat gewisse Ausgleichszahlungen bei Verlust von Vieh leistet.
Nick and I would support some kind of wolf managament even though we don't really know, yet how that could look like. Wolves can have a positive impact on nature and if one wants to live in the wilderness, one probably has to tolerate predators as well. But do we want to fear wolves like a growing number of people in Western Wyoming? One also has to consider the economic impact even though the state pays some kind of compensation for killed livestock.
Wir werden sehen. Die Zahl der Bergloewen und Coyoten in unserer Gegend waechst staendig, und wir als auch unsere Nachbarn muessen gewisse Verluste hinnehmen, die sich aber noch in Grenzen halten. Nun ziehen auch die ersten Woelfe (Baeren nicht zu vergessen) in die Black Hills. Ich bin sicher, dass sich diese unglaublich intelligenten Jaeger bald bemerkbar machen werden. Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit ...
We will see. The number of mountain lions and coyotes in our area is increasing and we as well as our neighbors have to accept some losses even though not many (yet). Now the first wolves (not to mention bears) are moving into the Black Hills. I am sure that these incredibly intelligent hunters will soon become noticable. It's only a question of time ...
