Wir - Nick, Nicks Mutter JoAnn und ich - haben Weihnachten bei Brandy, Brandon, Emmett und Garrett in Montana verbracht. Auf der Ranch, die Brandon jetzt managt. Mit dabei waren auch Brandons Eltern Kathy und Mike. Da ich gerade Smokey, Heikes Hund, babysitte und ihn und Gauge nicht allein zu Hause lassen wollte, waren auch sie mit von der Partie ... und fanden in Billie und Luna, Brandys und Brandons Hunden, willige Spielgefaehrten.

We - Nick, Nick's mother JoAnn and I - spent Christmas with Brandy, Brandon, Emmett and Garrett in Montana. On the ranch which Brandon is managing now. Brandon's parents, Kathy and Mike, were there, too. Since I am babysitting Smokey, Heike's dog, and did not want to leave him and Gauge alone at home, they joined us as well ... and found willing playmates in Billie and Luna, Brandy's and Brandon's dogs.

Endlich konnte ich auch Patch und Scotch wiedersehen, die bei Brandy als Ab-und-zu Reitpferde ihren Lebensabend verbringen. Ausserdem gehoert - wie bereits berichtet - Dun It (jetzt Roy) zur Herde. Esel Cisco verbringt den Winter hier, um als Roping Dummy zu dienen. Und dann ist da noch Emmetts Fohlen Bonita.

I could finally see Patch and Scotch again who are spending their retirement as once-in-a-while riding horses at Brandy's. And as mentioned before, Dun It (now Roy) is part of the herd as well. Donkey Cisco is spending the winter in Montana as a roping dummy. And then there is Emmett's filly Bonita.

Mit im Gepaeck hatten wir einen lebendigen Hahn fuer Brandys einziges Huhn, gefrorene Gaensebrueste fuers Abendessen und einen Tannenbaum ... denn auf der fast 20.000 Hektar grossen Ranch gibt es keine Baeume.

On the truck we also brought a live rooster for Brandy's single chicken, frozen goose breasts for supper and a Christmas tree ... since there are no trees on this 55,000 acre big ranch.

Kaum angelangt, fielen die Temperaturen ins Bodenlose. Wir mussten uns sehr warm anziehen, bevor wir raus gingen ... und genossen danach das warme Haus umso mehr. Nick und Brandon waren viel unterwegs, um unsere gemeinsamen Kuehe zu checken, die hier kalben sollten, bevor sie nach New Haven kommen. Insgesamt sehr entspannte Weihnachten ... obwohl ich natuerlich zu viel gegessen habe.

We were just there when the temperature fell rapidly. We had to put on several layers when going out ... and enjoyed the warm house the more after that. Nick and Brandon were gone part of the time to check on our joint cow herd. The cows are supposed to calf here before coming to New Haven. Altogether a very relaxing Christmas ... even though I ate too much.

Mehr ueber die drei Neuen / More about the three new ones

Twister

Twister, der Paint, und Apache, der Apaloosa, sind beides grosse Dreijaehrige mit weichen Gaengen und einer sehr freundlichen Persoenlichkeit. Doch waehrend Apache eher ruhig und zurueckhaltend ist, ist Twister sensibel und hat Temperament. Rappe Playboy ist bereits sechs Jahre alt und hat viel Gelaendeerfahrung. Er ist eher ein Anfaengerpferd, das aber auch Fortgeschrittenen gefallen wird. Und auch er hat butterweiche Gaenge. Darauf haben wir besonders geachtet, da nicht jeder Warmblutgaenge wie die von Vegas oder Sunny sitzen kann.

Twister, the Paint, and Apache, the Apaloosa, are both big three-year olds with smooth gaits and a very friendly personality. But while Apache is more quiet and reserved, Twister is sensitive and has some temperament. Playboy, the black horse, is already six years old and has quite a bit of trail experience. He is more for beginners but intermediate riders will like him, too. He also has smooth gaits. This is something we paid attention to about since not everyone can ride warmblood gaits like Vegas' and Sunny's.

Dafuer haben wir heute Classy als Kinderpferd an eine pferdekundige Familie verkauft. Sorry, Rita! Die harte Arbeit bei uns auf der Ranch haette Classy, die bereits 18 wird, kaputt gemacht. Schon diesen Sommer brauchte sie oefter Pausen. Jetzt hat sie - wie auch Grover, den wir vor drei Jahren als Kinderpferd an Nachbarn verkauft haben - hoffentlich noch viele gute Jahre vor sich.

Today we sold Classy as a kid's horse to an equine-knowledgable family. Sorry, Rita! The hard ranch work would have destroyed Classy, who is going to be 18, pretty soon. This summer she already needed breaks once in a while. Now she hopefully has - like Grover who we sold as a kid's horse to neighbors three years ago - many good years ahead of her.

Am Freitag haben Nick und ich Gaense und Huehner geschlachtet, d.h. Nick hat geschlachtet, ich habe das Fleisch gereinigt und verpackt ... und geheult.

On Friday Nick and I butchered geese and chickens, that is Nick butchered and I cleaned and wrapped the meat ... and cried.

Wir wuenschen Euch allen frohe Weihnachten und alles Gute fuers neue Jahr ... gluecklicherweise ist die Welt ja trotz aller Vorhersagen noch nicht untergegangen. Und auch wenn sie untergeht, bekommen wir das hier in Wyoming erst ein paar Tage spaeter mit :-)

Nick hat unseren kleinen Buckskin Dun It Brandy gegeben und dafuer von ihr einen grossen Rabicano-Wallach namens Kadoka bekommen, den er selbst reiten will. Poncho koennte also frei werden fuer den Gaestebetrieb. Nun muss ich wieder einen Bucksin suchen ... und einen Blue Roan ... und ...

Nick gave our little Buckskin Dun It to Brandy and in exchange got a big Rabicano gelding named Kadoka from her, which he wants to ride himself. Poncho may become a guest horse after all. Now I have to find another buckskin ... and a blue roan ... and ...

Da wir einige Pferde aus Altersgruenden als Kinderpferde verkaufen muessen *schluchz*, haben wir gestern drei neue junge Pferde gekauft. Auf dem Foto unten seht Ihr Twister (Bay Tobiano Paint), Apache (Apaloosa) und Playboy (Rappe). Diese Fotos sind vom Sommer. Werde in den naechsten Tagen noch weitere Fotos machen ... aber Achtung: Momentan sehen alle drei aus wie Wollmammuths.

Since we have to sell some older horses as kids horses *cry*, we bought three new young horses yesterday. On the photo below you see Twister (Bay Tobiano Paint), Apache (Apaloosa) and Playboy (black). The photos are from summer. Will take some more pics in the next few days ... but be aware: Right now all three look like wooly mammoths.

Chica mal wieder vorweg ... / Chica in the lead again ...

Von Kadoka, Bruno und Pearl abgesehen, die wir direkt an der Ranch halten, fuettern wir die Pferde immer noch nicht mit Heu. Es ist erstaunlich, wie gut sie ihr Gewicht halten. Das liegt allerdings auch daran, dass es bisher noch nicht sehr kalt war - fuer Wyomingsche Verhaeltnisse. Die Herde ist viel unterwegs, um Gras zu finden ... ganz so wie Pferde leben sollten ... auch wenn ich sie lieber verwoehnen wuerde.

Except from Kadoka, Bruno and Pearl who are right at the ranch, we are still not feeding the horses with hay. It is amazing how well they keep. This is also due to the mild weather - mild for Wyoming anyway. The herd is moving a lot to find grass ... just the way horses are supposed to live ... even though I'd rather spoil them.

Pearl wird am Samstag von Ryan abgeholt, die von Chicago nach Hulett zieht. Und ich darf wieder neue Pferde kaufen ... *yipeeh* Und fuer alle, die sie kennen: Romina ist auch wieder hier.

Ryan, who is moving from Chicago to Hulett, will pick up Pearl on Saturday. And I am allowed to buy new horses ... *yipeeh* And to everyone who knows her: Romina is back as well.

Am Samstag findet die New Haven Weihnachtsfeier statt, wo sich alle Nachbarn treffen ... und als Nachbarn bezeichnet man ja auch noch die, die bis zu einer Stunde entfernt wohnen. Ansonsten kaemen nicht allzu viele Gaeste ;-)

On Saturday we'll have the New Haven Christmas Party where all the neighbors meet ... and we call everyone a neighbor who lives up to one hour away. Otherwise there would not be many guests ;-)

Keine Angst, Schmusi (s.u.), Weihnachten wird es Gaensebraten geben. Von unseren eigenen Gaensen. Ich finde das voellig okay, denn unsere Tiere leben artgerecht. Und Fleisch in Massen (mir fehlt das "sz") - insbesondere aus artgerechter Haltung - halte ich auch fuer gesund. Immerhin sind wir Allesfresser. Aber leider machen mir meine Gefuehle trotzdem einen Strich durch die Rechnung, und ich bin ernsthaft am Ueberlegen, Vegetarierin zu werden. Aber vorher muss ich noch die Gaense aussuchen, die dran glauben muessen ... irgendwie gemein.

Don't worry, Schmusi (see below), we will eat goose for Christmas. One or more of our geese. I think it's totally okay since our animals are kept species-appropriate. And meat if eaten in small amounts can be healthy, too - especially if animals are kept right. Last but not least we are omnivores. But nevertheless my feelings for my critters get the better of me and I am seriously thinking about becoming a vegetarian. But before I still have to pick out the geese that won't make it past Christmas ... pretty mean.

Ansonsten ist viel Bueroarbeit angesagt. Werde aber trotzdem noch mal mit Gauge rausgehen und die Pferde suchen ... falls er mir das mit der Schleife bis dahin vergeben hat.

Other than that: lots of office work. But later I will go out with Gauge and look for the horses ... if Gauge has forgiven me for the ribbon by then.

Die Jagdsaison ist vorbei, Tom und Anke sind abgereist. Da Nick meine Kamera brauchte, habe ich in den vergangenen Tagen nicht viele Fotos machen koennen. Das Wetter ist weiterhin schoen und trocken. Ob es je wieder regnet??? Oder schneit? Wenn man zu wenig Niederschlaege hat, wuenscht man sich welche ... anders als in Europa.

Hunting season is over and Tom and Anke have left. Since Nick needed my camera, I could not take many photos in the last few days. The weather is still sunny and dry. Will it ever rain again??? Or snow? When you don't have any precipitation, you want some ... other than in Europe.

Nach den Katern ist auch Chester kastriert worden. Er nahm es mit Fassung. Hoffentlich hat er noch keine der Stuten gedeckt ... Thanksgiving haben wir essend verbracht. Und nun kommt Weihnachten mit grossen Schritten naeher. Heike und ich wollen naechste Woche in Rapid City shoppen gehen. Denver waere mir lieber, aber da faehrt man leider sechs Stunden.

After the tom cats, Chester was castrated as well. He does not seem to mind. Hopefully he has not have the time, yet to mount any of the mares ... We spent Thangsgiving eating. And now Christmas comes closer at high speed. Heike and I want to go shopping in Rapid City next week. Denver would be nicer but it's a 6-hour drive.

Uebrigens: Mai, Juni und die erste Julihaelfte sind bereits gut bzw. ausgebucht. Wer dann noch kommen will, sollte sich bald melden.

By the way: May, June and the first half of July are booked well or already out. If you want to come then, let us know as soon as possible.

Ich werde erstmal viel Zeit am Schreibtisch verbringen ... wie jedes Jahr im Dezember.

Nach ein paar kalten Tagen ist es wieder warm und sonnig geworden. Schlecht fuer die Jaeger, weil die Hirschboecke sich trotzt der Brunft in den schattigen Canyons verstecken, gut fuer uns, weil wir reiten koennen. Gestern waren Anke, Krista (die Frau unseres Jagdguides Tom) und ich unterwegs, um unsere Pferdeherde zu checken.

After a few cold days it has become warm and sunny again. Bad for the hunters because despite the rut the deer bucks are hiding in the shady canyons. Good for us because we can go riding. Yesterday Anke, Krista (the wife of our hunting guide Tom) and I went out to check on our horse herd.

Poco, den ich fuer Stella eingetauscht habe, macht sich gut. Nach anfaenglichem Unwillen wird er immer motivierter (wenn auch alles in Zeitlupe). Anke moechte ihm am liebsten mit nach Deutschland nehmen.

Poco, who I got in exchange for Stella, is doing well. After being somewhat unwilling at first he is getting more motivated with every ride (even if in slow motion). Anke would love to take him home to Germany.

Wir haben auch unserem Nachbarn dabei geholfen, seine Faersen/Kalbinnen (erstgebaehrende Kuehe) hereinzuholen. Am Tag danach stand ein weiterer Schwangerschaftstest an. Die "offenen" (nicht schwangeren) Kuehe haben wir dann zusammen mit Ken zum Viehauktionshaus gefahren.

We also helped our neighbor to move in his heifers (first-time mother cows). On the day after they had to be preg checked as well. Together with Ken we drove the "open" (not pregnant) cows to the livestock sale barn in town.

Am Samstag haben Nick und ich es zum dritten Mal in diesem Jahr geschafft, ins Kino zu gehen. Der neue James Bond war spannend, aber ich will auch unbedingt "Lincoln", "Argo" und "Flight" sehen.

On Saturday Nick and I managed for the third time this year to go to the movie theater. The new James Bond was exciting. But I also want to see "Lincoln", "Argo" and "Flight".

Am Donnerstag wird hier das traditionelle Thanksgiving-Fest gefeiert, immer mit Truthahn. Dieses Jahr werden wir nur zu Viert sein: Nick, seine Mutter JoAnn, Anke und ich. Doch vorher hat Nick noch viel Arbeit am See zu erledigen ... ja, darueber wollte ich irgendwann auch noch ausfuehrlich berichten.

Thursday is Thanksgiving-Day, probably the most traditional of all American holidays. And it's always turkey. This year we'll just be four: Nick, Nick's mom JoAnn, Anke and I. But before Nick still has a lot of work to do at the lake ... yes, at some time I will have to write about that in more detail.

Als ich die Dezemberausgabe von "Western Horseman" aufschlug, war die Ueberraschung gross: Auf einer ganzen Doppelseite war dieses Foto zu sehen, das Les Voorhis waehrend seines 2011 Fotoworkshops auf unserer Ranch geschossen hatte. Wir freuen uns und sind natuerlich auch stolz auf Tav, Pal und Leftie :-)

When I opened the December issue of "Western Horseman", the surprise was big: The photo above filled a whole double page. It was taken by Les Voorhis during his 2011 photo workshop on our ranch. We are pretty thrilled and of course also proud of Tav, Pal and Leftie :-)

Apropos Stuten / Speaking of mares

Wurmkur-Traumteam: Silke haelt, Anke spritzt ... Tramp ist gar nicht begeistert. /

Wir entwurmen unsere Pferde nur zweimal im Jahr: im Herbst nach dem ersten Frost (wegen der Dasselfliegeneier) und im Fruehjahr. Anke und Silke haben dieses Jahr einen Rekord aufgestellt: 36 Pferde in weniger als einer Stunde. Die meisten Pferde nahmen es gelassen hin, viele wollen sogar eine zweite Wurmkur. Das Reintreiben der Pferde gestaltete sich viel schwieriger, da Chica und Ginger (Stuten!) grundsaetzlich nicht kooperieren und den Rest der Herde in die falsche Richtung fuehrten. Zum Glueck war Nick mit dem Motorrad dabei.

We only worm our horses twice a year: in fall after the first frost (bot eggs!) and in spring. Anke and Silke broke a record: 36 horses in less than one hour. Most of the horses tolerated the worming pretty well, some even wanted a second wormer. Much more difficult was moving the horses back to the ranch and into the corral since Chica and Ginger (mares !) never cooperate. They led the rest of the herd astray. Good luck Nick was on the motorcycle.

Und da das Wetter so schoen war, hat Nick auch noch schnell Nachbars Bullen in den Haenger geladen (dieses Mal per Pferd) und zur Heimatranch gefahren. Dann haben wir die Schafe entwurmt, die jungen Boecke kastriert und Barbie, unserem aeltesten Schaf, die Hufe getrimmt.

And since the weather was so nice, Nick also loaded neighbor's bull into the trailer (this time on horseback) and drove him to his home ranch. We then wormed the sheep, castrated some young bucks and trimmed Barbie's hooves. She is our oldest sheep.

Anke hat angefangen, Poco zu reiten, der ja leider bis vor kurzem lahm war. Der kleine Dun Roan/Roan Dun ist brav, aber noch unerfahren. Anke moechte ihn im Koffer mitnehmen.

Anke started to ride Poco who unfortunately had been lame till recently. The little dun roan/roan dun is easy-going but still inexperienced. Anke wants to put him into her suitcase.

Ausserdem haben wir mehr traechtige Kuehe gekauft (bisher 91), die gleich nach Montana auf die von Brandon gemanagte Ranch gefahren wurden. Wir suchen aber noch nach weiteren Kuehen.

On top of that we bought more bred cows (91 so far) which were trucked to Montana to the ranch Brandon is managing. We are still looking for more cows.

Auf Samstag wurde es sehr kalt und schneite ... was den Abschied fuer Silke einfacher machte. Zwei Wochen sind mal wieder im Fluge vergangen.

On Saturday it became very cold and it snowed ... which made saying bye a little easier for Silke. Two weeks have gone by so fast again.

Am Dienstag haben wir unserem Nachbarn Ken geholfen, seine ca. 260 Kuehe zur Ranch zu treiben und auf Schwangerschaft zu testen. Die Nicht-Schwangeren (in diesem Fall waren es 18) haben Pech und werden als Schlachtvieh verkauft, denn hier kann sich kein Rancher leisten, eine Kuh nur zum Spass durchzufuettern.

 

On Tuesday we helped our neighbor Ken to move his about 260 cows to the ranch for preg checking. The open cows (not pregnant, in this case 18) have bad luck and are sold as butcher meat because here no rancher can afford to feed a cow just for fun.

 

Das Wetter war herrlich. Der Viehtrieb dauerte nur knapp zwei Stunden. Dann begann die Arbeit am Chute. Waehrend Nick und die Cowboys dafuer sorgten, dass immer Rinder im Chute waren, testete der Tierarzt mit einem Griff in den After der Kuh und in diesem Fall auch mit einem Ultraschallgeraet, ob das Tier schwanger war oder nicht. Vom Darm aus kann man die Gebaermutter ertasten. Ultraschall macht die Untersuchung noch genauer, ist aber auch teurer.

 

The weather was gorgeous. The cattle drive only took close to two hours. Then we worked on the chute. While Nick and the cowboys kept the flow of cows going, the vet checked for pregnancy by pushing his arm into the cow's rectum - in this case also using ultrasound. From the intestine he can palpate the uterus. Ultrasound makes the check even more exact but it is also more expensive.

 

Ken bediente den Chute, Silke gab Impfungen, Anke bediente die Tore, und ich verabreichte Entwurmer. Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang waren wir fertig. Dann mussten noch die Jaeger bekocht und gewaehlt werden. Ich darf ja mit Green Card nicht waehlen, aber Nick tat seine Buergerpflicht. Mit einem Kommentar zum Wahlergebnis halte ich mich hier lieber zurueck :-)

 

Ken worked the cute, Silke vaccinated, Anke took care of the gates and I applied wormer. We were done by sunset. And still had to cook for our hunters and go and vote. I am not allowed to vote because I only have a Green Card but Nick did his duty as a citizen. And no: I am not going to comment the outcome of the elections in this blog :-)
